MIT announces Energy Research Council
Following quickly on the themes of her inaugural address, MIT President Susan Hockfield yesterday announced the formation of an Institute-wide Energy Research Council.
The council, to be co-chaired by Chevron Professor Robert C. Armstrong, head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, and (Tech Policy fave) Professor Ernest J. Moniz of physics and engineering systems and director of energy studies at the Laboratory for Energy and the Environment, will outline an Institute-wide response to the global energy crisis by February 1.
Read more about it from MIT News (MIT takes on world's energy crisis).
Check this link where "techpolicy fav" Moniz gives dry, uninspiring thoughts on achieving energy security.
I nearly choked when the words "tar sands" come out of his mouth.
Compare and contrast to the entertaining Thomas Friedman, advertising his new book, "The World is Flat". An engaging talk, though his revelation is hardly that. He should get an academy award for his effort at selling the audience that he is a genius and radically forward thinker, when in fact he is nearly two years behind.
Geez, I like being critical.

Mike, that isn't critical of Friedman, this is critical:
FLATHEAD
The peculiar genius of Thomas L. Friedman.

If you want more criticism of Friedman: read But the World is still Round, Flatman (archived here as well).
