TPP's 30th Anniversary

Just in case you missed the flyer, this year the Technology and Policy Program is celebrating its 30th anniversary.  A schedule of events is posted on the program website.  The events include two yet-to-be-determined lectures on Technology and Policy leading up to a very special "weekend" of events keyed around the 6th annual TPP Symposium on Thursday, June 8.

I will post more as details become available.

Terrorism, Security, and America's Purpose

Both John Robb and Juan Cole have pointed towards this conference: Terrorism, Security, and America's Purpose is being webcast, and aired on C-Span as well. I have listened to a few speakers, and it is worth listening if you are interested in hearing different perspectives.

UPDATE: I just heard the words Complex Adaptive Systems and Wicked Problems.

Inaugural address by Susan Hockfield

In her inaugural address, MIT's new President Susan Hockfield highlighted two areas where MIT can contribute greatly. First is the convergence of Engineering and Life Sciences:

Combining our historic strength in engineering and our newer strengths in biology and the brain and cognitive sciences, we are already opening unprecedented opportunities for educational innovation, invention and discovery. Geographically and intellectually, we are bringing together our computer scientists and life scientists, our linguists, philosophers and engineers. And we are already seeing a torrent of new collaborations, insights and results.

Second area is Energy and the Environment, some thing that TechPolicy writers take very seriously.

Tackling the problems that energy and the environment present will require contributions from all of our departments and schools. Many MIT faculty are working already on new routes to renewable and sustainable energy. We need to advance this scientific and engineering work, while focusing our efforts and magnifying their impact, through our world-class expertise in economics, architecture and urban planning, political science and management.

To this end, we have begun working with the faculty to develop a major new Institute-wide initiative on energy. This initiative will foster new research in science and technology aimed at increasing the energy supply and bringing scientists, engineers and social scientists together to envision the best energy policies for the future.

Richard Layard in conversation with Bob Solow

I got really interested in the science of happiness after I heard Daniel Kahneman speak at MIT last year. American Academy of Arts and Sciences had an entire issue of the Bulletin dedicated to the science of happiness, but I particularly liked Robert Frank's article. Currently, I am reading the speeches that Richard Layard gave a couple of years ago. He will be in a conversation with Robert Solow on Friday February 11th at 3 p.m. about his new book HAPPINESS: Lessons from a New Science. See here for more details on the event.

Walid Khadduri, editor-in-chief of the Middle East Economic Survey. George Kahale, managing partner and head of the corporate international department at Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt and Mosle LLP Adrian Lajous, the former CEO of PEMEX, a Mexican National oil company.

Middle East Economic Surveyis the most respected source of energy and economic information from this region and Khadduri's reputation, developed over 17 years as its editor, is well-known in every Arab capital. He is one of the world's foremost experts on Middle Eastoil and will have just returned from meetings with Iraqi oil officials. Prior to joining the Survey, he worked with the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC).
